I agree your points. I personally do not see any great reasons to use the w3c validator for the pages. 

Interms of business point of view, probably for SEO delievery manager/company point of view and for the reason of maintaining the SEO and company standards, yes, it is well required. 

As a techie doing SEO for the website, by a mere look at the content of the page/layout/view source, you can be able to gather information whether if you have used any malformed html tags.
